During the first year, students focus on the normal anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of each organ system, while the second year emphasizes pathology and disease mechanisms, preparing students for their clinical rotations and future medical careers.
Clinical Skills Lab: Designed to ensure that preclinical students are well-versed in the clinical skills essential for their upcoming clerkships. This lab provides a valuable opportunity for students to practice effective communication with healthcare professionals and collaborate as part of a healthcare team.
Anatomy Labs: Provides a solid foundation in anatomical studies. Featuring 3D virtual dissector computer stations, students have instant access to Adams Atlas and pre-recorded prosected demonstrations. Additionally, the labs include plastinated human specimens, anatomical models, and imaging studies like X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. High-definition audiovisual systems display dissection demonstrations on five large monitors, enhancing the learning experience.
Emergency Medicine Training Center: Established in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic and recognized as an American Heart Association™ International Training Center, focuses on essential skills in basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) for both adult and pediatric patients.
Osler and Crumpler Suites: Provides a simulated ward environment that allows medical students to practice their skills outside the traditional classroom setting. Here, they have the opportunity to interact with standardized and professional patients, refining their bedside manner, history-taking, and diagnostic skills—essential competencies for successful clinical rotations.
SimMan 3G: A highly realistic patient simulator designed for training in various clinical scenarios. SimMan features a controllable airway, realistic breathing, pulse, chest tube insertion, simulated hemorrhaging, and even tears for a lifelike experience.
SimBaby: A cutting-edge infant simulator used to train medical students and physicians in infant care. SimBaby's anatomy includes realistic breathing, circulation, and vascular access points for comprehensive training.
Noelle: A birthing simulator that offers a complete prenatal-to-birth experience, providing students with essential skills for OB/GYN rotations. Noelle includes a realistic birth canal, C-section inserts, and simulated tissue, with both rapid and extended delivery modes.
Harvey: Recognized as the gold standard in cardiopulmonary simulation, Harvey offers 25 cardiac functions, including varied blood pressure, pulse, and heart sounds. Endorsed by the American College of Cardiology, it is a key tool in medical training for cardiology and emergency medicine.
To support students, AUA offers a variety of scholarships and financial aid programs, ensuring medical education remains accessible to exceptional and deserving candidates.
Provost Scholarship: Awards up to $100,000 to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements. Recipients receive $10,000 per semester (1–4) plus Intersession, and $12,500 per payment period (5–8). To qualify, students must have an MCAT score of 505 or above, a prerequisite and undergraduate GPA of 3.50 or higher, and hold an undergraduate degree.
High Achievers Scholarship: Awards students with funding between $90,000 and $100,000 for their dedication to academic success. To be eligible, students must have a prerequisite GPA ranging from 3.71 to 4.0, highlighting their ability to maintain high academic standards throughout their studies.
Dean’s Achievement Scholarship: Awards $80,000 to students who excel academically. Recipients receive $8,000 per semester (1–4) plus Intersession, and $10,500 per payment period (5–8). Eligible students must have an MCAT score of 505 or above, a prerequisite and undergraduate GPA of 3.50 or higher, and hold an undergraduate degree.
Admissions Committee Award: This scholarship provides between $55,000 and $70,000 in funding, with $11,000 awarded per semester (1–4) plus Intersession. Applicants must meet the criteria of a prerequisite and undergraduate GPA of 3.50 or higher.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Prospective students should have completed courses like General Biology I and II, General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II, Physics I, and English I, and Mathematics (Calculus or Statistics).

AUA has a comprehensive pathway for qualified students to complete 60 undergraduate school credits and earn an associate degree (AS) in Health Science degree in just two years. This includes fulfilling all prerequisites necessary for medical school admission. BIMS is the first in the northern West Indies to offer Anatomage Table 10 learning to every enrolled student.
To earn the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from BIMS School of Medicine and Health Professions, students must complete a total of 708 credit hours.
Basic Sciences (Preclinical)
Years 1 & 2: The first two years consist of 80 weeks and 468 credit hours (156 credits), with students studying on campus in Montego Bay, Jamaica. These years focus on foundational sciences, integrating basic science knowledge with clinical applications.
Clinical Training
Years 3 & 4: The final two years consist of 82 weeks and 240 credit hours (80 credits) in clinical clerkships. Students rotate through clinical sciences at BIMS’s affiliated teaching hospitals, primarily located in the United States, Jamaica, the wider Caribbean, and Asia. These rotations emphasize core medical disciplines essential for family practice and comprehensive patient care.
Human Anatomy Lab: A fully equipped lab features a real human body museum, cadavers preserved through plastination technology, the Anatomage Table, and HoloAnatomy learning tools. These advanced, engaging, and academically validated resources are designed to educate students with the goal of producing the world's best cohort of future medical doctors.
Digital Library: Students have access to a comprehensive digital library that includes numerous books, publications, and medical journals, in addition to physical textbooks, all housed within a spacious 4,000-square-foot campus Library.
Simulation Lab: The simulation lab includes ample bays to accommodate 8 to 10 patient beds, providing students with hands-on training in clinical medicine through simulated patient examinations and experiences.
Anatomage Table 10: FDA-cleared for medical diagnosis and serves as a valuable resource for surgical case reviews, patient consultations, and medical research. The latest version features digitally compressed human bodies at the time of death, along with simulations, enabling students to practice dissection an unlimited number of times.
HoloAnatomy: The Hololab, featuring Microsoft's HoloLens and augmented reality technology from Case Western University in Ohio, revolutionizes human anatomy education.
Plastination Technology: The BIMS’ Body Museum utilizes plastination to preserve pre-dissected real human cadavers, providing an interactive learning experience for hands-on study.
ADMISSION REQUIREMEMTS
Standard Applicants: Prospective students have completed four years of accredited secondary school education and earned a Bachelor’s degree/Post-Baccalaureate Requirements from an accredited college or university.
Accelerated Applicants: Applications from students with three years of exceptional undergraduate work completed will be considered and are required to have completed at least 90 credit hours from an accredited college or university OR have completed one academic year of English Composition, Physics with Labs, Biology with Labs, General Chemistry with Labs, Organic Chemistry with Labs, Calculus or Statistics.
GPA-Based Applicants: Prospective students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 AND have completed all of the following coursework: A Minimum of 8 Semester Hours in Biology, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physics. A Minimum of 6 Semester Hours in Organic Chemistry, English - Composition & Literature, and Behavioral Sciences.
1. A detailed description of all community service activities, highlighting the nature of your involvement and the skills you developed.
2. A letter/certificate from the organization(s) verifying your participation and contribution OR any other documentation of your service hours, including dates, locations, and the organizations you worked with.
Community service experience should reflect your compassion, leadership, and ability to connect with diverse populations, all of which are critical qualities for future medical professionals.
